Our Disaster Services Training Programs
American Red Cross Disaster Services Training Programs
It is critical to the community for the American Red Cross to be prepared to respond to disasters. Disaster relief training is an essential component of becoming a disaster relief volunteer. Training is FREE to all those who are interested. Disaster training through the American Red Cross is consistent nationwide; therefore, our volunteers can provide equal and consistent services no matter where a disaster occurs.
Basic Level Courses – Those interested in taking basic level training should meet the prerequisites prior to attending class. Prerequisites can be found on the course Fact Sheet (located on Crossnet).
Advanced Level Courses – Those interested in taking advanced level training must meet the prerequisites as listed in the course Fact Sheet. In addition participants must complete an Application for Advanced Training (Form 5898-H) – This requires the Director of Disaster Services signature for approval.
Basic Food Safety FHMCC200S, 01/08 (Basic)
The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the safe food handling principles used in the activities performed by Mass Care feeding workers in support of a disaster relief operation.
CBRNE Ready Respond DSGEN210C, 02/09
The purpose of the training is to prepare chapter executives, emergency services program managers and their volunteer counterparts to use the new CBRNE Handbook and Annex in planning for and responding to a CBRNE event.
Client Assistance Cards: Caseworkers DSCLS200C, 07/06 (Basic) The purpose of this online Disaster Services course is to prepare Red Cross employee and volunteer caseworkers to properly receive and issue Client Assistance Cards during a local disaster response and on a disaster relief operation.
Collaborating to Ensure Effective Service Delivery ARC 3089-4, Rev. 06/04 (Basic)
The purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross employees and volunteers to establish collaborative relationships that contribute to coordinated disaster response and help to ensure effective service delivery. This course will also prepare participants to begin conducting liaison activities in a chapter and establish a foundation upon which they can build toward a career as a liaison in the Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) System.
Community Disaster Education Instructor Specialty ARC 5028, Rev. 9/00 (Advanced)
The purpose of this instructor specialty course is to prepare instructors to teach Community Disaster Education workshops ensuring uniform, quality activities consistent with the goals and directions American Red Cross Community Disaster Education. This course provides opportunities for practice teaching with direct supervision in a classroom setting, and opportunities to receive evaluation and support in development of instructional skills, as well as the benefit of the experiences and skills of other participants in a learning environment.
Disaster Assessment Basics DSIMS100A, 4/09 (Basic)
The purpose of this course is to provide a general overview of the tasks performed by Red Cross Disaster Assessment workers in support of a disaster relief operation and a local incident such as a single or multi-family fire.
Disaster Frontline Supervisor DSSSS601A, 11/08 (Basic)
The purpose of this course is to prepare supervisors to lead a team of disaster workers to deliver high quality client service and to create a climate that promotes worker satisfaction.
Disaster Frontline Supervisor Simulation DSSSS602A, 11/08 (Basic)
The purpose of the simulation is to provide participants an opportunity to practice their supervisory knowledge and skills in leading teams that deliver high quality service and to create a climate that promotes worker satisfaction.
Disaster Fundraising: Preparing and Responding in Chapters (Advanced)
Disaster Fundraising (DFR): Preparing and Responding in Chapters is a skills-based training course that provides the tools for chapter leadership, staff and volunteer fundraisers to prepare for and execute disaster fundraising campaigns in response to disasters within their jurisdiction, and during national disasters. The primary focus will be on the management of disaster fundraising at chapters for Level I – III operations.
Disaster Instructor Specialty Training ARC 3090, Rev. 3/00 (Advanced)
Disaster Instructor Specialty Training is an instructor-led course designed to prepare knowledgeable and experienced Disaster Services workers to teach basic level disaster training courses, thereby ensuring uniform and quality disaster training consistent with Red Cross policies and the regulations and procedures of Disaster Services.
Disaster Kitchen Supervision ARC 3068-5, 9/05 (Advanced)
The purpose of this course is to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to supervise the staff and tasks conducted at a disaster relief operation kitchen.
Disaster Kitchen Training ARC 3068-30, Rev. 03/05 (Basic)
The purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross and partner agency staff to work at a kitchen site and prepare large numbers of meals for those affected by a disaster. Activities at a kitchen site include: preparing the food in the kitchen and working in the yard/supply area and mobile feeding area, if needed.
Disaster Public Affairs Overview DSOSS201C, 10/07(Basic)
The purpose of this online course is to provide an overview of the role Public Affairs plays in disaster relief as well as guidelines for Red Cross employees and volunteers working in any activity to use when responding to a media inquiry.

The purpose of this workshop is to give the participant introductory knowledge of the Disaster Services Technology activities.
Disaster Services Technology Customer Service Workshop
The purpose of this workshop is to give the participant introductory knowledge of the Disaster Services Technology Customer Service activity.

The purpose of this workshop is to give the participant introductory knowledge of the Disaster Services Technology Networking activity.
Disaster Services Technology Computer Operations Workshop
The purpose of this workshop is to give the participant introductory knowledge of the Disaster Services Technology Computer Operations activity.
Disaster Services Technology Communications Workshop
The purpose of this workshop is to give the participant introductory knowledge of the Disaster Services Technology Communications activity.
Emergency Operations Center/Incident Command Liaison ARC 3089-5, Rev. 06/05 (Basic)
The purpose of this basic Disaster Services course is to prepare Red Cross employees and volunteers who will be assigned to government and emergency settings to work collaboratively with Red Cross partners, helping to ensure a coordinated response that results in effective service delivery.
Emergency Operations Center Liaison Self Study DSPSS201S, Rev. 08/06 (Basic)
To prepare Red Cross employees and volunteers who do not have prior Government Liaison training or experience to accept or continue assignments to government and other emergency management settings.
ERVs: Ready, Set, Roll ARC 3068-4, Rev. 09/05 (Basic)
The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services course is to prepare Red Cross employees and volunteers to operate an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and its equipment safely and effectively to meet feeding and other service needs of people affected by disaster.
Family Service Supervision I ARC 3072-3, Rev. 03/95 (Advanced)
Effective February 1, 2007 the Family Service Supervision I (ARC 3072-3, Rev. 03/95) course is discontinued. Due to significant changes within the Client Casework activity, the course content is no longer up-to-date and relevant to current procedures and does not include instruction related to fiscal controls, case monitoring and the Client Assistance System (CAS).
Financial and Statistical Information Management ARC 3078-2, Rev. 08/06 (Basic)
The purpose of this basic-level disaster services course is to prepare Red Cross employees and volunteers to perform the tasks of a Financial & Statistical Information Management (FSI) service associate on a disaster relief operation.
Foundations of Disaster Mental Health ARC 3077-4, 12/05 (Basic)
The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services training is to prepare licensed mental health professionals to provide for and respond to the psychological needs of people across the continuum of disaster preparedness, response and recovery.
Fulfilling Our Mission - Translating Your Compassion into Community Action DSGEN200A, 09/07(Basic)
The purpose of this course is to enable participants to translate their care and compassion into community action, through a uniform message. The participants will be able to assess how to use their skills and abilities to strengthen the capacity of both the community and the Red Cross to better serve people affected by disaster. They will understand the mission of the Red Cross, the principles and values that support the mission and the expected behaviors of Red Cross volunteers and employees in the conduct of that mission and then will be given the next steps.
Fundamentals of Chapter Disaster Operations Management ARC 3081-30, Rev. 04/05 (Advanced)
The purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross employees and leadership volunteers to manage a small disaster relief operation, which is chapter managed and accounted, and at least partially funded by the Disaster Relief Fund.
Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment DSIMS200B, Rev. 08/06 (Basic)
The purpose of this course is to introduce the critical role of Disaster Assessment, explore related preparedness tasks, learn how to collect and communicate disaster assessment information, and become familiar with how disaster assessment information supports management and service delivery decisions.

The purpose of this course is to examine the scope and responsibilities of the Public Affairs activity, in order to provide a framework in which to apply your public affairs knowledge, skills and experience on disaster relief operations.
Fundamentals of Instruction and Facilitation ARC 3090-1, Rev. 10/98 (Basic)
The purpose of this self-study course is to provide basic information about the skills, abilities and knowledge needed to become a basic and intermediate instructor and facilitator for the American Red Cross Disaster Services Training System. Participants will learn how to represent the Red Cross, what functions and methods are used by effective instructors and how to prepare for, conduct and evaluate Disaster Services training courses and simulations.

The purpose of this course is to provide Red Cross Material Support Services staff with the knowledge, skills and abilities that enables them to prepare for and support Red Cross services following a weapons of mass destruction/terrorism (WMD/T) incident within their chapter’s jurisdiction.

Workshop for Development of Community Disaster Education DIS 4461 The purpose of the workshop is to prepare you to plan for delivery of quality Community Disaster Education presentations by providing background information and support. The workshop provides information on ways to overcome disaster denial issues to motivate individual and family disaster preparedness actions. It does not teach platform presentation skills; rather, it focuses on how to choose appropriate messages for target audiences and selecting materials that convey those messages.
